Arriba for Mexican fare and tequila with a twist

Where: The Village Restaurant Complex, Asiad Village
Cuisine: Mexican
Cost: 2500 for two

Arriba is currently the city's only tequileria and that was JUST about enough to get me to check it out. I am not too fond of Mexican food (except tacos, tacos are everything) but have fairly enjoyed the cuisine or whatever little I've tried of it here in Delhi. Arriba serves a great variety of Mexican dishes, familiar and unfamiliar, most of which are presented with the twist of tequila.

It's a cozy place (not the most ideal option for large groups) that comes alive at night with pretty lanterns and festive Latin music. There's indoor as well outdoor seating with classic white walls, bright furniture and dim lighting. Overall, it has a super-romantic vibe and works as a fantastic first  (or any) date place.

We began with their signature tequila cocktails suggested by Executive Chef Noah (also the Executive Chef at Hungry Monkey and the neighbouring Tabula 2.0). Like us, you're bound to be impressed by Arriba's extensive alcohol menu. I started off with Jalapeno Bandito (with jalapeno infused tequila, apple, lime and pickled cucumber) because I am a daredevil.  It was almost tolerably spicy with a refreshing kick of lime and a delicious slice of pickled cucumber.

Another favourite included Heaven on Earth, a mix of tequila, blueberry, green tea and lavender. For those looking for something stronger (and not sweet), go for the Barrel Aged Tequila Manhattan. A simple, no-nonsense drink for those who take their alcohol seriously, the Manhattan comes with 8-week aged Blanco tequila, Sweet Vermouth, Maraschino liquer and orange bitters.

Salsa and Guacamole Carnivale was the first to arrive- an assortment of five types of salsa, a big bowl of fresh, delicious guacamole and home-made tortilla chips. The salsa flavours included mango, watermelon, classic tomato salsa, jalapeno and tangy green tomato- the last two being my favourite. However, I wasn't very impressed with the home-made tortilla chips as they went soggy too soon. If you're in the mood for something spicy, go for the Stuffed Spiced Jalapenos with Goat Cheese Mousse. Deep fried with crispy crumb on the outside, the jalapenos came stuffed with a melt-in-mouth mix of goat cheese and spices- a definite Mexican win!

Perfect bite-sized accompaniments to your drinks, Panuchos are egg and black bean stuffed fried tortillas served with toppings of your choice (I was pretty happy with zucchini, squash and feta). For non-vegetarians, my carnivore friend reccommends the Tequila Chilli Shrimp Mini Tacos and Jalapeno Spiced Fish Tortas (mini burgers).

Even though I was quite full by this time, it's just against my principles to not try dessert. So we skipped the mains and went for Tres Leches Cupcakes and Tequila Lime Cheesecake. The cupcakes were light and fluffy with three mildly sweet toppings- mango, avocado and what seemed like vanilla. The cheesecake however, was way more satisfying with a slightly burnt crust that made it even better.

The prices are a little on the higher side but the service is impeccable. Go to Arriba for its festive vibe, yummy tequila cocktails and mind-blowing Guacamole.
